Mural Unveiling at Milwaukie Community Center

Artist Alex Chiu painting a mural panel

A new mural on the Milwaukie Community Center (5440 SE Kellogg Dr.) will be unveiled on Tuesday, June 25 from 1 to 2 p.m. The community is invited to attend, and learn more about the mural, artist and community center. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Inspiration for the mural design was drawn from the Milwaukie Community Center’s active and diverse community, featuring several people who have helped contribute to their essential programs over the years. Themes of friendship, inclusion and connection are highlighted as well to help reinforce the community center’s role as a welcoming space for people of all ages.

The mural was created by Alex Chiu, a Chinese-American artist from Portland, who has a background in illustration and comics. Chiu approaches public artwork as a form of visual storytelling, incorporating community input and collaboration. Funding for the project came from a partnership between Milwaukie Community Center Foundation, Milwaukie Arts Committee and City of Milwaukie. The mural was painted on panels offsite at Chiu’s studio and will be installed together to form a complete image on the westside of the Milwaukie Community Center, facing the Sarah Hite Rose Garden.
