Council President Robert Massey
First Elected: Nov. 8, 2022
Term Expires: Dec. 31, 2026
Councilor Massey was looking for a hometown in 2015 and chose to make it in Milwaukie. In his career as a Naval Officer, he moved 13 times. So, after that vagabond life Milwaukie’s strong sense of community was very appealing to him. While looking at a house for sale in Milwaukie a resident approached Robert and said moving here would be one of the best decisions he could make. Some of the best advice ever according to Robert.
Robert became involved in several volunteer organizations and ultimately applied to serve on the city’s Planning Commission. His four years on the Commission allowed him to participate in land use decisions, which are frequently the most important a city can make. During the Comprehensive Plan update in 2020, he chaired the commission. The Comprehensive Plan benefited greatly from citizen participation which included advisory groups, town halls, open houses, and public hearings. Robert believes city policy is always better when we have a wide variety of views. On a related note, he urges residents to volunteer for a board or commission. His public service is very rewarding and believes others’ experience would be the same.
While Councilor Massey sees Milwaukie as a great place to live, he knows there is always room for improvement. In making Milwaukie even better, Robert believes community engagement, infrastructure, and sustainability are enduring focus areas.
On January 16, 2024, Council selected Councilor Massey to serve as interim Council President.
