Samantha Swindler Named Volunteer of the Year
City Council recently selected Samantha Swindler as the 2023 Volunteer of the Year. Samantha has been volunteering with the city since 2019. As a member and chair of the Milwaukie Arts Committee, Samantha has led several large-scale events and projects. For the past several years, she has organized and led the successful Porchfest concert series, which will continue this year on July 12, 19 and 26, 2024.
“Porchfest is a citywide block party that creates opportunities for everyone to share and celebrate Milwaukie’s artistic talents in an easily accessible way.” Samantha said about the continued success of Porchfest.
At the start of the year, she saw her longtime passion to create a New Year's Eve event in Milwaukie come to life with Bing in the New Year, which also included the installation of a permanent cherry along with a history about the Bing cherry. Through the Arts Committee, she also coordinated other art-based activities in partnership with the city’s signature events, including community mural and piano paintings, crafts, DIY umbrella kits and more. In addition to the Arts Committee, Samantha volunteers extensively with the Hector Campbell Neighborhood District Association, regularly helping with neighborhood events, such as the annual Haunted Forest in Homewood Park and Adopt-A-Road clean-ups.
Samantha approaches volunteer work with optimism and confidence. She is undaunted from her goals despite the obstacles that pop up on her path. All of that, combined with her passion and can-do attitude, inspire those around her and helps ensure her endeavors are successful.
Other nominees for the 2023 Volunteer of the Year award included Robby Bricker-Voyles, Christi Cawood, Pam Denham, Terri Geier-Brindell, Heather Hobson, Charlotte Navarre, Stephanie Pino-Hess, Dennis Ward, and Steven Watkins. Thanks to each of the nominees for their dedicated volunteer service and to those who nominated them. To learn more about the award, contact Jason Wachs at wachsj@milwaukieoregon.gov or 503.786.7568.
