Project Details

The Asphalt Pavement Overlay project is part of the Street Surface Maintenance Program (SSMP), which is a city-wide program to improve our streets.

The Asphalt Pavement Overlays SSMP Project includes paving SE 55th Ave south of SE Firwood St. SE 55th Ave is one of the last gravel roads remaining in the city. The existing gravel will be re-graded to support the new asphalt, and will include new graveled shoulders. The project will also complete asphalt overlays on several city streets, including SE 29th Ave, SE Rockwood St, SE Fieldcrest St, and SE 50th Ave. Please refer to the map to see all streets covered under this project (below).

An asphalt overlay is a paving method used on deteriorating surfaces. Instead of removing the existing asphalt and the base material underneath, a new layer of asphalt is applied to the existing surface. This method of paving can increase the longevity of a street by 8-15 years.

During construction of the Asphalt Pavement Overlays SSMP Project, neighbors and commuters should anticipate noise and dust from construction equipment, on-street parking restrictions to allow contractors to safely work and allow for equipment and materials to be stored, and traffic delays in and near the project areas. Street and lane closures are to be expected during the grading and paving process. Brix Paving was selected as the successful bidder for the project. Brix has notified homeowners on impacted streets regarding temporary closures while paving is being applied.
