Project Details

The city is working with multiple departments to plan and execute the South Downtown improvements in anticipation of the Farmers Market relocation to SE Main Street in May 2020. The goal is to complete the projects in a timely manner, to be efficient and reduce impact to the public in the area. Lane and road closures will be coordinated throughout the project, while keeping access to the local businesses. Review the website for alerts and updates.

Main Street Crossing Lowering

During the installation of the Orange Line by Tri Met the undercrossing for vehicles was under designed with a clearance of only 8 ft 6 in. The main objective of this project was to increase the clearance to 13 ft 6 in and to provide better safety for the undercrossing. Construction work included new advanced warning signs, new sidewalk and railings, and devices to protect the railroad bridge.

Main Street & Washington Street Reconstruction

Due to the relocation of the Farmers Market to this area the city has decided to implement the planned festival street that can be used for multiple events throughout the year. These improvements include new sidewalks, street lighting, water and electrical connections, undergrounding of power and telecommunication utilities, and reconstruction of the roadways. The design is to bring the two downtown streets up to code per city standards.  Main Street and Washington Street Reconstruction is set to be completed in November.

South Downtown Plaza

For many years the city has been talking about a plaza that connects the SE Adams walkway to Dogwood Park. We have a completed design and concept plan that uses artistic designs created from public involvement. The Plaza features mosaic elements that are assembled by an artist in their studio and brought to the site to be placed in the specialty lithocrete colored concrete. Construction on the plaza began in early September and will be completed in November.

Downtown Public Area Requirements (PARs)

These projects involve the construction of the right-of-way to comply with General Circulation Requirements, Street Standards, and Design Details as defined in the Public Area requirements document to complete the downtown refinement plan and implement the Milwaukie Downtown and Riverfront Plan. This focuses on completing improvements on Main Street and Washington Street as well as the South Downtown Plaza.
