The city invites the community to participate in the 2024 Milwaukie Leadership Academy!

The purpose of the MLA is to provide an opportunity for community members to learn about how the city works directly from city staff, current volunteers, and elected officials.

The academy also provides a great foundation for anyone considering leadership positions with the city. This includes the city’s boards, committees, commission, and Neighborhood District Associations (NDA). It is also a good starting place for anyone who is considering running for City Council in the future.

Class sessions will be held during the evening (6-8 PM) once per month from January through June 2024 for a total of six sessions. Session topics include:

  • Milwaukie's form of government
  • Public Safety
  • Community Development
  • Planning
  • Engineering
  • Public Works
  • And others!

Classes are facilitated by Stephan Lashbrook, a longtime city volunteer with decades of experience in local government, and Dan Harris, the city's events and emergency management coordinator. This course includes interactive presentations by city staff and community volunteers. Classes are held in person, but most have the option to participate remotely.

There is no charge for the academy, but class size is limited to 25 students for 2024.
