Accountability

All formal complaints are investigated and tracked. Toward the end of 2019, the department recognized a need to formalize the tracking of lower level complaints. While significant complaints which could lead to formal discipline have always been formally investigated and tracked, lower level complaints historically could be resolved more informally at the sergeant level. We recognized potential flaws in this system and based on internal recommendations from staff, implemented additional requirements. All complaints are now tracked equally, with slightly different processes based on the seriousness of the issue. Complaints can be filed by calling or walking into the police department. Complaints can be filed with a sergeant, captain or chief. The City Manager and/or Human Resources Director are routinely briefed on complaints. The Milwaukie Police Department recognizes we’re accountable to the public for how we manage these processes and we’re committed to it. While this profession is always challenging, with a lot of moving parts, an internal culture of accountability is important to all of us. 

In 2019 there was one complaint related to Use of Force, and that did not involve a person of color.   

Does the Milwaukie Police Department have body worn cameras or in car cameras? 

Beginning in 2022, Milwaukie Patrol Officers and Supervisors are outfitted with Motorola Body Worn cameras while working uniformed patrol.
