Scott Park Redevelopment Kicks-Off With Event on May 1
The community is invited to Scott Park (10660 SE 21st St.) on May 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a kick-off celebration for the park's redevelopment. Everyone is welcome to share their thoughts about how Scott Park should be redeveloped, and enjoy food and family activities.
During the event, Angel Ocasio, a top physical comedian in the Pacific Northwest, will perform from 10:45 to 11:35 a.m., combining physical comedy, magic, juggling, music, audience participation and his unique style of comedy in a fun bilingual show (English-Spanish). Next, Habiba Addo performs from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Addo is a performer and artist working in the traditions of Afro-Cuban and Ghanaian dance, drumming, songs and storytelling. His performance will include stories and vocals in movement from various countries in the continent of Africa. Throughout the event, Smokin Barrel Smoke And Grill House will be on site providing free meals to the first 150 people who participate in the event. Options include pulled pork sandwiches or hot dogs with a side of coleslaw or potato salad and a beverage. The project team will also give out free reusable tote bags and crayons, and host family-friendly activities and games.
ABOUT THE PARKS DEVELOPMENT
The city recently received more than $2.25 million to complete the development of three neighborhood parks: Balfour Park, Bowman-Brae Park and Scott Park. The funding will add park amenities and equipment while creating gathering spaces and increasing art. This funding comes through Oregon’s portion of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 that is allotted to the state’s senators and representatives. Senator Kathleen Taylor and Representative Karin Power each requested that a portion of their district funds be allocated towards the improvement and development of neighborhood parks.
Before any construction begins at each of the parks, the city is conducting a comprehensive community engagement process to create dialogue between community members and city staff about how they feel these improvements should be carried out and look like once completed. Emphasis in the engagement process will focus on hearing from stakeholders who were not previously involved in master planning processes.
