City Council Declares State of Emergency
At its Tuesday, March 17 meeting, City Council declared a state of emergency for Milwaukie due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak. The declaration ensures the City of Milwaukie will have access to regional, state and federal resources, as they are needed.
Milwaukie took preventative measures this week in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by closing city buildings and the Ledding Library, and directing many city staff to work remotely.
As part of the declaration, City Council took additional steps to support the community during the public health crisis. These include suspending all water shut-offs and returning water service to those who received shut-offs, forgiving all library fines accrued during the library closure, and postponing municipal court proceedings and payments.
“We need to rely on one another to stay safe and protect those at greatest risk, and slow the spread of this disease,” City Council said in a letter to the community. “Social distancing and practicing good hygiene are our best available tools for getting through this together.”
City Council also committed to explore new tools to hold virtual public meetings to continue to provide opportunities for community engagement. In the meantime, they urged the community to follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control, State of Oregon and Clackamas County health officials.
The Mayor and City Councilors encourage everyone, not only the Milwaukie community, to follow an important piece of advice—“Be kind to one another.”
“We know these times are full of uncertainty. The patterns of our lives are disrupted. For many of us, work, family life, friendships and daily routines are all out the window. But, when those things fall away, we can see all of the other ways we are connected or can be connected. Stay in touch with your loved ones by phone, text and video chat. If you have neighbors with health issues, check in with them to see if they need a shopping trip.”
